Course Description:

The course will provide students with an opportunity to learn Australian Indigenous archaeology in the field through the eyes of Indigenous people whose heritage it is. Students will have the opportunity to work with  Indigenous archaeologists, and with Traditional Owners. Indigenous Elders provide a unique learning opportunity for the students by providing knowledge and guidance about the heritage and history of their traditional lands. Students will be taught archaeological field survey and excavation techniques in a manner sensitive and respectful to Indigenous Traditional Owner concerns and wishes. The course will provide students with the valuable opportunity to consult with Indigenous people regarding their heritage and learn first hand what their heritage issues and aspirations are. Archaeological practice will be entwined with Indigenous knowledge and understanding in an Indigenous learning environment.

Indicative Assessment:

Field note book (30%), indigenous consultation exercise (30%), project assignment (30%) and individual project presentation (10%).

Pre-fieldschool seminars, 7-9 day Fieldschool, Post-fieldschool seminars
