Course Description:

This course introduces you to the Australian legal system and the law regulating business activities.  Particular focus is given to the law of contract.  And consumer contracts in particular.  Aspects of property law and negligence are also covered.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course students should understand:

  • The workings of the Australian legal system including law making and dispute resolution processes;
  • The legal principles relevant to the formation, administration and termination of business contracts;
  • The laws relevant to particular types of business contracts including sales of goods and insurance law;
  • Basic concepts of Australian property law;
  • The law of negligence in a commercial context;
  • And be able to apply legal analysis and legal reasoning particularly to legal problems.

Final Examination 60%

Workload:

6 hours per week

Private Study.  There is a large volume of material to be covered in this course and you may need to spend some time in the first few weeks learning about legal method. You will need to attend lectures and tutorials, read the text and also cases and statutes.
