Course Description:

This course introduces students to the range of primary reference tools both traditional and modern, Chinese and Western, available to scholars and translators working in the the field of Chinese Studies.

The course includes discussion of the history of traditional Chinese practices of of bibliography and lexocography

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course students will have an advanced understanding of the theoretical and methodological issues pertaining to the the range of reference tools available in the field of Chinese Studies and Chinese/English translation.

They will have applied their knowledge and experience of these tools to a particular topic.

Indicative Assessment:

Two assignments of 1500 words - 15% each

One seminar presentation and related 1000 word essay -30%

One major essay ( 3000 words) - 40%

Workload: Three contact hours per week

Requisite Statement:

Applicants should have obtained a Bachelor degree from an approved tertiary education institution, with at least six Credit level grades in courses other than first year courses.

Students who are native speakers of English should have at least a major in another language, or equivalent.

Students who are native speakers of other languages should have completed their undergraduate degree in English or meet the normal English language requirements of the ANU
