Course Description: This course introduces to students to the emerging discipline of cultural epidemiology,  defining what it is and how it might be undertaken.  It focuses on employing cultural theories, concepts and related methods to the health of populations and sub-populations.
The course will cover 
  • the history of cultural epidemiology
  • theoretical approaches
  • main methodological issues
  • discussion of Australian and New Zealand research examples 
  •  current debate
Learning Outcomes: Students will be expected to gain at the postgraduate level, skills in:
  • interdisciplinary understandings
  • critical analysis of cultural epidemiology texts
  • appropriate written and verbal expression 
  •  evaluation of key methodological approaches
Indicative Assessment: 6,000 words written assessment, (90%), seminar/ online participation (10%). Written assessment will consist of 2 short papers on specific topics and one major essay (5,000 words).
Workload: Two day intensive course on campus with additional online teaching via computer and internet.  Online teaching methods may include podcasting, interactive tuturoals, live chat and discussion fora.
