Course Description: The course begins with a discussion of social policy principles that can be used to assess social policies. The policy-making process is also addressed. Experts then give lectures on case studies in social policy with which they are familiar. In each case, the lecturer considers the history of the implementation of the policy, its rationale, the politics involved, an evaluation against social policy principles, and the current standing of the policy. The cases to be addressed are given below in the course schedule. Students will be assigned to provide comments on the cases provided by the lecturers.

 

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, the student should be able to:

 

  1. Analyse and evaluate social policy on a case by case basis against standard social policy principles.

  2. Translate the knowledge gained into new social policy contexts.

  3. Discuss particular social policies in a critical context.

 

Indicative Assessment: Assigned discussion in class (10%), Class participation (10%), essay of 5,000 words (80%).
Workload: Two ninety minute sessions on campus per week. 

Readings are provided for each lecture. Students are expected to read these before class and be prepared to ask questions of the lecturer. Students will also be assigned in groups to provide comment and lead discussion on one social policy area.
