Course Description:

This course provides a theoretical and empirical discussion of labour markets. Topics considered will include: labour supply and the determinants of hours of work, migration, investments in human capital, labour demand, wage determination, discrimination, internal labour markets, trade unions, and macroeconomic issues related to wages and employment.

Learning Outcomes: This course equips students with an economic perspective to analyse a wide range of labour market issues.
Indicative Assessment:
  • A mandatory but redemptive mid semester exam - 34%
  • 2 hour final exam - 66%

An optional  redemeptive essay (2000 words) can be arranged for students who are interested in which case assessment will be based on the following -

  • Essay - 20%
  • Mid semester exam - 20%
  • Final exam - 60%
Workload:

Two 1-hour lectures and one tutorial per week.

Completion of or concurrent enrolment in ECON2101/2111 Microeconomics 2 (P or H).
