| Course Description: |
In this course, an introduction to the critical reading and writing skills necessary for successful study at the graduate level will be provided. Critical reading skills will encompass skills such as recognising a writer's purpose, expertise, assumptions and underlying values;
understanding and recognising text organisation and patterns of argument; inferring meaning and recognising implications; assessing the quality of a text; and understanding a text in its wider context.
Writing skills to be taught will include constructing and supporting an argument; writing appropriate introductions and conclusions; reporting skills (including the ability to differentiate between fact and opinion, choose appropriate reporting verbs, summarise, paraphrase and write a
reference list); and writing in the genres appropriate to Environmental Management and Development studies (e.g. essays, critical reviews and reports).
