Course Description:

The course seeks to offer students:

  • a framework for better understanding forest policy processes and outcomes;
  • an overview of current issues in forest policy and practices, and perspectives on them;
  • exposure to analysing and communicating forest policy issues;
  • the opportunity to engage with and learn from forest policy and management practitioners.

Note: Graduate students attend joint classes with undergraduates but are assessed separately.

Learning Outcomes:

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

1. an understanding of forest policy processes and outcomes, both internationally and in Australia
2. an overview of current issues in forest policy and practices, and perspectives on them
3. enhanced skills in analysing and communicating forest policy issues.
Indicative Assessment:

Assessment will be based on:

  • Oral & written field course report (35%; LO 2, 3)
  • Oral & written forest policy statement (30%; LO 1, 2, 3)
  • Literature review (35%; LO 1, 2, 3)
Workload:

5 hours/ week (2.5 of which are contact) during semester, and a 5-day field course. The field course may precede the start of Semester 1, in the week of 15 February
