Course Description:

This course allows a special topic of study for individuals or small groups of students who wish to gain particular or additional knowledge in a topic in environment and society not covered in other courses taught in the School or elsewhere in the University. Depending on the topic, students may be required to develop a guided reading program, and/or to take part in selected lectures, workshops, tutorials, seminars, discussion groups, field trips and other activities.

Learning Outcomes:

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

1. pursue guided investigation of of a topic relevant to the environment, analyse and synthesise relevant knowledge, and communicate that learning in seminar and written formats

Indicative Assessment:

The nature and weightings of assessment items will be customised in negotiation with each student, but will be based on:

Development and presentation of a learning plan (LO 1)
Presentation of one or more short seminars (LO 1)
A summary paper or papers of 5000 words in total (LO 1)

Workload:

Students are expected to devote at least ten hours a week to guided readings and/ or attending selected lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials, and supporting work.

Bachelor degree; professional knowledge or experience relevant to topic area

Requisite Statement:

Admission to this course is at the discretion of the Associate Director Education, Fenner School, subject to the availability of a suitable supervisor.

Recommended Courses:

Quantitative and/or qualitative research methods courses relevant to research topic.
