Course Description:

Money Markets and Finance is designed to familiarise students with the components of the financial system as well as to introduce them to the three basic ideas underpinning finance: the time value of money; diversification; and, arbitrage.  The aim of the course is to provide students with introductory exposure to financial transactions, institutions and markets including money markets, stock markets, foreign exchange, derivative markets and contracts. It provides students with a solid foundation for later studies in finance. 

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course students are expected to have attained a sound working knowledge of financial transactions, institutions and markets including money markets, stock markets, foreign exchange, derivative markets and contracts.  They are also expected to have a good understanding of the three basic ideas underpinning finance: the time value of money; diversification; and, arbitrage.

Indicative Assessment:
  • In-Class Assessment Tasks (best 2 of 3 quizzes and best 2 of 3 in-tutorial discussions) 10%
  • Mid-Semester Examination (0% if the mid-semester exam is not attempted or it is redeemed in the final, or 30% if the exam is not redeemed in the final)
  • Final Examination (90% if the mid-semester exam is redeemed, or 60% if the mid-semester exam is not redeemed)

To obtain an automatic pass grade in this unit you must obtain 50% or more as an aggregate mark on the assessment.

Workload:

At least three contact hours per week (a two hour lecture and a one hour tutorial) plus private study time.

Requisite Statement:

Completion of or concurrent enrolment in STAT1008 Quantitative Research Methods, or STAT1003 Statistical Techniques, or STAT2001 Introductory Mathematical Statistics, or current enrolment in the Bachelor of Actuarial Studies or associated combined degree.
