Course Description:

This course aims to provide the student with a sound understanding of the fundamentals of data communications, distributed applications, network management and security as they relate to the business environment, business management and staff. It aims to provide up-to-date coverage of key issues for businesses such as, among others: high-speed networks, mobile networking, ISDN, asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and TCP/IP technologies from a business perspective, and the use of the Internet, intranets and extranets to support business objectives.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, students are expected to have attained a knowledge of or proficiency in the following areas:

  • The fundamental concepts underlying data communications
  • Different types of networks and the technologies on which they are built
  • Distributed and client/server application architectures
  • The Internet, intranets and extranets
  • Network management aspects and security issues
  • Business aspects of data communication technologies

Workload:

3 hours per week plus a study commitment of approximately 5-10 hours per week (excluding the seminar).
