Course Description:

The Strategic Management of Information Technology and E-Commerce (SMITEC) course is intended to equip participants with a foundation set of skills on which they can build strategic frameworks for the successful exploitation of IT in their own organizations, from a business perspective. The course explores in depth the principles that underpin business processes and the role of IT as a trigger for, and enabler of, strategic process improvement. IT strategy is approached using a model that recognises distinct roles for infrastructure, applications and organisation. Key technologies and current movements examined may include electronic commerce, outsourcing and business process engineering.

Learning Outcomes: This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive and firm understanding of the concepts and issues involved with the Strategic Management of Information.
Indicative Assessment: Assessment may include a combination of individual or group reports or assignments, a test or examination and class participation.
Workload: Teaching for this course is likely to be in the format of one 3 hour seminar per week; however, enrolment numbers may dictate that it be run differently. Students will also be expected to put in up to 5 hours of their own time outside of class focussing on individual research.
Course Classification(s): TransitionalTransitional courses are designed for students from a broad range of backgrounds and learning achievements, which provide for the acquisition of generic skills; or an informed understanding of contemporary issues; or fundamental knowledge for transition to Advanced or Specialist courses.
