| Course Description: |
The course addresses the Big Questions in physics. These are fundamental questions that relate to our understanding of our place in nature. Examples are the nature of reality and the role of science in exploring it. - We will introduce, in conceptual form, the basic theories of quantum mechanics and relativity with enough depth to understand the challenges facing modern researchers in these areas.
- We will describe some current research in emergent phenomena such as climate modelling.
- As well as examine the possibility of the existence of extra-terrestrial life.
Throughout the course we will look at the philosophy, ethics and sociology of science.
The course is suitable for both science and non-science students, and while being conceptually challenging, it requires no mathematical background. |
