Course Description:

The first course in mathematical statistics with emphasis on applications; probability, random variables, moment generating functions and correlation, sampling distributions, estimation of parameters by the method of moments and maximum likelihood, interval estimation, hypothesis testing, use of t, chi-square and F statistics, application of the central limit theorem to large sample reference, simple linear regression.

Learning Outcomes: On completion of this course students should have an understanding of and be able to apply the techniques outlined in the course description.
Indicative Assessment:
  • Two assignments: 10% each
  • Midsemester exam: 20%
  • Final exam: 60%

10 hours per week.
