The Classics Program offers a major in Latin. Proficiency in Latin is highly recommended at the earliest possible stage for those wishing to specialize in the study of the Roman world. The study of Latin is also very rewarding in itself. The courses we offer give you a unique opportunity to read in the original language the literature, history and philosophy of the ancient Roman world. From your engagement with the past through its language and literature you will gain a richer understanding not only of that world but also of contemporary society. Requirements The major in Latin consists of a minimum of 42 units (normally 7 courses): The sequence of courses for the Latin major is dependent on the student's language competence.
With the permission of the Convener, a student with appropriate language competence may also enter the major at Continuing Latin or Intermediate Latin level. Students with prior experience of Latin should consult the Convener prior to, or at the time of enrolment. Students taking both an Ancient Greek and a Latin major may not count Traditional Grammar towards both majors. Such students should consult the Convener as to which further course they should take to complete both majors. Courses to be offered in 2009:
