Academic Contact:

Dr John Field and Dr Richard Greene

Areas of Interest:

Environmental Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies - Sustainability, and Resource Management and Environmental Science

Description:

There is an increasing need for the development of sustainable land and soil management techniques and practices in the Australian context. The emphasis in this minor is on the applications of a thorough understanding of basic physical, chemical and biological properties and ecological processes involving soils and landscapes, and the functions and outputs they provide. Students who complete this minor will have developed the knowledge necessary to understand and contribute to the design and implementation of scientifically valid soil and land management practices.

Learning Goals:

On completion of the minor in Soil and Land Management students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Conduct a detailed literature search and prepare a major research paper on major issues related to land and soil management.
  2. Discuss a range of land and soil management issues with various managers, government extension officers and private consultants, and prepare a report on these issues.
  3. Explain both the scientific underpinning and environmental implications of critical issues in land and soil management, and develop sustainable management practices of land and soil resources in a range of environments.
  4. Conduct meaningful research into a range of land and soil management issues.

Requirements

This minor requires the completion of 24 units, which must include:

A total of 18 units from the following compulsory courses:

ENVS2021  Vegetation and Soils: Landscape Co-evolution and Ecology

ENVS3002  Sustainable Agricultural Practices

ENVS3004  Land and Catchment Management

A total of 6 units chosen from the following courses:

ENVS2015  GIS and Spatial Analysis

ENVS2020  Hydrology and Landforms for Natural Resource Management

ENVS2022  Sustainable Systems: Rural

ENVS3008  Fire in the Environment

ENVS3026  Geomorphology: Landscape Evolution and Changing Climate

Advice to Students:

Students should seek further course advice from one of the academic conveners of the Soil and Land Management minor.
