Professional development to enhance your practice as a university teacher, research supervisor and academic leader

The Graduate Certificate in Higher Education provides an opportunity for academics and others engaged in educational and academic practice to enhance their effectiveness, with a primary focus on coursework teaching, research supervision and academic leadership.  The program is designed for academic staff, as well as casual and general staff who are teaching, supervising postgraduates, or who are otherwise responsible for enabling others to learn.

The GradCertHE supports participants in the design and pursuit of personal professional learning (development) plans through tuition, structured readings and reflections and by conducting projects directly related to their current practice needs. Components of the program are explicitly tailored to support the enhancement of skills in the scholarly facilitation and management of learning. Completing the Graduate Certificate provides valuable credentials in higher education within a program that both capitalises on work that the participant is currently doing and is individually tailored.

It is of particular relevance to:

  • Staff new to teaching and research supervision
  • Experienced teachers and supervisors moving into an educational leadership role
  • Staff whose current or future roles require management or leadership skills in an academic context
  • Early career and postdoctoral researchers preparing for an academic career
  • Curriculum groups reviewing their courses and programs

Program Outcomes

At  the conclusion of the program, participants should have the knowledge and skills to:

  • engage in the continuous diagnosis of their own individual professional learning and development priorities (in the key areas of undergraduate teaching, graduate supervision and/or academic leadership), informed by literature, practice and their own professional context
  • develop, implement and evaluate outcomes of plans and actions in pursuit of these priorities
  • feel prepared to undertake a leadership and mentoring role in their professional workplace
and have:
  • developed a network of colleagues with a shared understanding of educational theory and practice
  • obtained credentials that are valued nationally and internationally
Note: The GradCertHE does not provide accreditation for teaching in schools.
