Purpose of the Graduate Certificate in Higher Education

The GradCertHE provides an opportunity for academics and others engaged in educational and academic practice to enhance their effectiveness, with a primary focus on coursework teaching, research supervision and academic leadership.

The program supports participants in the design and pursuit of personal professional learning (development) plans through tuition, structured readings and reflections and by conducting projects directly related to their current practice needs. Components of the program are explicitly tailored to support the enhancement of skills in the scholarly facilitation and management of learning. Completing the Graduate Certificate provides valuable credentials in higher education within a program that both capitalises on work that the participant is currently doing and is individually tailored.

Intended outcomes

At the conclusion of the program, participants should have the knowledge and skills to:

  • engage in the continuous diagnosis of their own individual professional learning and development priorities (in the key areas of undergraduate teaching, graduate supervision and/or academic leadership), informed by literature, practice and their own professional context;
  • develop, implement and evaluate outcomes of plans and actions in pursuit of these priorities; and
  • feel prepared to undertake a leadership and mentoring role in their professional workplace with regard to teaching, supervision and/or management.

The program is highly flexible as each participant can customise their study commitments to meet specific needs, subject to overall assessment requirements. Customised learning goals and plans may be  negotiated with the Program Convenor prior to the commencement of study.

Intended Participants

The program is designed for academics and others (for example casual staff, general staff) who are teaching, supervising postgraduates, or who are otherwise responsible for enabling others to learn.

Prerequisites

Any undergraduate degree from a recognised higher education institution. Priority will be given to ANU staff.

Advanced Standing

Intending participants interested in discussing options for advanced standing in recognition of relevant courses or projects completed at ANU or elsewhere should consult the Program Convenor.
