This program provides students with the opportunity to study the nature of language, with focus on applications such as the teaching and learning of first and second languages or the use of language in human interaction. This program of study would benefit students who have a background as language teaching professionals but are seeking more specialised knowledge related to their work.

The required minimum level of achievement for the Master of Applied Linguistics is 70%, averaged over Part A and Part B.

Prerequisites

Applicants for entry to the Master of Applied Linguistics should have obtained a Bachelor degree from an approved tertiary institution with passes at least at the level of Credit, in other than first year courses, to the value of six courses. Students who are native speakers of other languages should have either completed their undergraduate study in English or meet the normal English language entry requirements of the ANU.

Applicants who wish to apply for entry directly into Part B should have completed the Graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics (or an equivalent) with an overall average equivalent of distinction (min. of 70%) or better, and have achieved at least a credit level (min. of 60%) in all courses. Credit for previous postgraduate courses at an approved institution may be possible, up to 50%, to be approved by Prescribed Authority.
