  <course-description>&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;The course begins by considering trade-environment interfaces ? the effects of trade on the environment and the effects of environmental protection on trade. Macro issues are discussed with regard to free trade philosophy vs &amp;quot;limits to growth&amp;quot;. National sovereignty vs right to trade; and trade as environmental incentives/deterrent are also addressed.&#65533; The course provides an overview of international trade law framework at the international and domestic levels. &lt;p&gt;Environmental disputes in the WTO and international trade liberalisation regime are considered in relation to:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;GATT;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The Agreement on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Standards;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The Biodiversity Convention and the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights; and&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;The WTO Committee on Trade and Environment.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;The course examines trade-environment responses in regional trade groups: the European Union; the North American Free Trade Agreement; and the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Finally, lessons for the Multilateral Agreement on Investment are considered as well as the developing principles of sustainability in the multilateral trade and investment regime.&lt;/p&gt;</course-description>
