<course-description>
In this course we focus on some of the central debates in the contemporary study of IPE, with particular reference to developments in the Asia-Pacific region. We begin by looking at the debate on globalisation: do we live in a global economy; is the contemporary world economy qualitatively different from previous eras; to what extent does globalisation constrain the policy choices available to states? We then turn to the regional level to examine the reasons for the current proliferation of regional trade agreements, and their effects on domestic, regional and global political economies. We then consider the prospects for regional monetary integration, taking a critical look at proposals for monetary integration in East Asia and the South Pacific. Finally, we consider the impact of globalisation on inequality and poverty.

This course assumes knowledge of introductory International Political Economy. Accordingly students must:
*have completed INTR 8013 or INTR8048 International Political Economy; or
*have completed another semester-length introductory IPE course elsewhere either at undergraduate or graduate level; or
*in the absence of the above, undertake an introductory workshop and complete a set reading list prior to the start of the semester.

</course-description>
